Migration Certificate

For those of you who have taken up higher studies, I'm sure you might have received requests from the administration for something called the Migration Certificate authorizing the transfer of your awesome talents from your alma mater to your current institute of study.

Summary of Procedure:

1. You need a photocopy of either your:

Provisional Degree Certificate ("PDC")

or
marks cards of all semesters

Submit photocopies of these along with filled-out application form and DD shown above to the University either in person or via post.

2. Demand Draft of Rs 250/- made out to 'Finance Officer, VTU' payable at Belgaum) if from a domestic university or Rs. 1,000/- if foreign university.

3. And you also need to get the form and PDC attested with the signature of the Head of the Institution where you studied under VTU.

4. This is the step I'm a bit confused about. Should one submit their application to the institution where they previously studied for sign off from the Head or can they directly send it on to VTU?

If somebody could clarify this step, it would most helpful!

Who thought that a message about a website of a certain company that was down for maintainence would start a fiesty discussion that lasted nearly an hour and had all participants rubbing the sleep from their eyes and crawling in 50 messages deep to join the conversation. I most certainly had a lot of fun.

While I can't speak for the others. I'm sure they were tempted to report the discussion as spam (see picture). While I was working very hard to deliver content suited for the purposes of enlightenment and entertainment, there were others who were mostly trying to game the discussion and draw attention to their meaningless drivel.

125+ messages later, we're now getting complaints from people whose inboxes are now overflowing. Follow this link to adjust your subscription settings for the group. You may turn off the receipt of individual messages if you want from now on. But I recommend that you keep it where it is, for better reachability.

The Day

Dearest 8th sem IS ,

There's nothing much to write in here ....except that I'm using this space to let us know that today (12/05/09) was the last day we sat together as a class .

It reminds me of this scene in Titanic when the ship is sinking ....These band guys perform for one last time and then the violinist looks at them and says ,"It was a pleasure playing with you...."(or something like that...!)

I kinda have the same feeling going through me... one can mock me saying ,"Stop with the sentiment anne !...." .

You can call me stupid or sentimental or just another idiot ...

Hey ! But the feeling is true !

didn't get to know most of you ...But let me confess ...I did try my best to reach to the position of saying atleast a " Hi ! " when I saw you in the corridor or at the canteen or at the water filter ;)

I thank each one of you for all the things you've taught me : Either be it tryin to get all courageous to mass bunk or laugh at any silly joke or not judging people before getting to know them or smiling with the heart or just being helpful !

I shall carry alot more things with me ,than mentioned above !

Everyone ,in some way or the other, in a big way and in small, has contributed to making me the person I am .

I am humbled .

I whole heartedly thank all those who came up with this "Wonder-La" plan...Personally it helped break a lot of barriers . I wish we could have spent more time together in another place besides class .....It surely would've made a lot of difference .

I'm sure where there's a will there's a way.....

Twenty years from now when I look at pictures of today....I maynot remember your names ....But I'll surely remember the kind of person you were...

Results Out?

Update: Not quite. But I'm out to lunch though!

I woke up today morning at around 8 AM as a result of having slept too little, too late.

I've subscribed to the ChangeDetection.com service that sends you an email whenever a site that you want to track for changes, actually well, changes.

I track both the VTU Home Page and the Results Page

There was a change monitored in the VTU Homepage.
That happened to be the academic time table which I've sent to you groupies.

I happened to check the results page to find this:

A little taken aback for once by VTU's surprise move, I reacted instinctively: by entering my USN number and waiting for the results to be fetched. This was so quick there was barely any time to breathe, or send out prayers.

And I ended up with this:

Did April Fools' Day get postponed or something? Maybe the sysadmin thought this would be a good way to test whether the new PIII system they got out of the junkyard actually works.

Or wait, maybe that whole exam thing was a nightmare that lasted two months.
We'll find out either way. Expect results soon, people. They are coming.

P.S. If you actually swallowed all that tripe I gave you, you ought to know, you have been punkd! Attribute this error to lack of sleep and plain stupid. I got used to being in VII semester. :-) And I wanted a nice way to test out the power of post-hypnotic suggestion. Don't kill me on Monday!

Drop Some Spam Into The Pan

When I checked on one of our drops recently, I found that some spambot had gotten busy and left helpful little notes for those of us with ED on it.

Note(!): Have deleted the notes so, if anybody needed the information, don't worry, just check the Spam folder in your GMale!

Have also turned off the ability for non-humans to post notes to drops from now on and I will be checking with the drop.io team on this. Write them a thank you, if you like!

TESTED: JAIKU

Alright people, the testing is done, and we've finally CERTIFIED Jaiku as follows:

Not So Ideal Yet Perfectly Elegant For Those Miserly Miserly People Out There Class Networker

Trouble with Jaiku is, we don't have enough invites to go around। You see, Jaiku is still
invitation-only (we're so cool, we'll have people rushing to get their jaiku in the door!) , and each person who signs up has to wait for a bit to able to give out invites. They give them out 20 at a time and the trouble is, there's no telling when they'll stop sending out free updates to cellphones ("free" being the reason we use the service!)

Okay, what we're trying to do has been explained already.
But I'll repeat again, and tell you, we're trying to create make use of a platform that already exists to implement a broadcast system for all students in class to get information regardless of whether they're in class or not.

It works like this:

I want to put out a message to the entire class regarding the exam dates :

I've typed it out and now, I post:

People get this message on their mobile phones as a text message, on Jaiku, or on IM. All this within 5 seconds of posting.

They think they have some information about this, so what do they do:

The comment gets put up online, people get text messages with the comment. And thus, we have updates on the issue coming in as fast as people can use T9. You can also use Google Talk to send in your comments! Just use the @reply system.

Simple, right?

Communication: The Networked Classmate

Communication with a wide group of people becomes so difficult when you have a wide variety of ways to do it, and the intelligence and aptitude levels of the target audience varies considerably. :D

This is only expected as you can't have everybody understanding everything there is to understand. IF that was the case, then what we must ask the question: would the For Dummies(R) series have even existed? Probably not, but if everybody was expected to learn things as a dummy would, then it would probably be a better thing for the dummy books to exist.

Okay, this discussion concerns methods for communication across a wide variety of poeple with differing levels of comprehension and techno-comfort barriers. The more sophisticated ones would head on over to an IRC chatroom where all their classmates would be waiting at their keyboards, armed with up-to-date information to share with everybody else. The others would just slither over to class and wait for somebody (the class crier??) to raise their voice and disseminate information.

The objective here is to create a

redundant, efficient, low-cost, and speedy, wide-reaching

communication system to deliver and share information among the entire class.

The trouble with both approaches is that, they just don't work the way they're supposed to! Information delivered to people in class has the following features:

Max audience reach, because most people are expected to be present in class at any given time of the day, however there are exceptions to this! (Think mass bunking)
Whenever somebody makes a lot of noise to make his/her presence felt, people (unless they're making a lot of noise themselves) actually spend a few moments of their waking time listening to what they have to say (this is subject to variations depending on the ambient level of noise)
Very few people actually dream of going up on stage to give seminars. "Not something I'd want to do everyday" sayeth the average Macha/Machi in class; so when somebody actually stands above everybody else, it is at least assumable that they have something to say

So, that's the take on the class. How do we make the communication personal?
Via the Internet? Why not? What happened to good ole' text messages? Let's use that for something more than just jokes! Let's use these to communicate and network! You see it's all about information. Let's examine some benefits these mediums offer:

One-to-one communication, it's there, it doesn't go away (as long as you don't lose your phone, or end up breaking your machine)
Intention and purpose can be made clear and concise depending on how one intends for the audience to interpret the message
Efficient broadcasting medium: everybody gets the message and redundancy is ensured by broadcasting through multiple channels. (Chances of the Internet going down are far lesser than the chances of your mobile network going down)

If we can exploit a combination of these mediums, we'll probably end up with a far better level of communication among everybody in class.

Which is why, I'm proposing that we use Twitter (for SMS and Web), Google Groups (Web), and GMail (Web) for achieving what we want to do. We've already started using two of these services as you know, we just have to complete rolling out to twitter, and then in a few days and with very minimal expense, we'll be the first completely networked class in CMRIT. :D

I'll prepare an plan outline in the next couple of days, after the internals, and then we'll do what we have to do to get this off the ground.

UPDATE: Just created a jaiku account, field tests will begin with a subset of class-student-body. Interested guinea pig cellphone users may volunteer cellphones (and that means talktime as well) and their time and patience to help us get this setup. We're trying it with a maximum of 5-10 people to see if we can actually make this work.

We'll also try it with twitter and see if that works as well. Just leave comments for this post, or reply to the "Getting Things Organized Thread" (requires you to be signed in to access) in the group to express your interest in poking around with T9 and URLs for about 20 minutes. I'll let you know when the time is right!

Community: The Best Result

For the longest time I've felt that we need to unite people groups within the class to achieve a common sense of purpose. What I am here to do: this needs to be answered with some amount of clarity, else you'll end being just another one of those other people, the also-did-engineering-and-got-placed-with-good-company kind of person. Instead, you could end up being the person who likes stringing a big bunch of words together, or the person who likes inky fingers! (yes, the people who've donated generously to the Fingerprint-Yourself-'Cause-You-Never-Know-When-You-Might-End-Up-In-The-Chokey cause are examples!)

People are your reflections in the mirror of time. This is something I've always believed in. And I've found that the best way to get to know yourself, is often the best way to get to know other people as well. (excuses! excuses!)

A feeling of groupiness, gathering, belonging, community, all something we've been looking for. Something that unites us all. And so, we've come up with the group for our class. The link's on the right side of the page for those absent-minded profs.

Open up. Just let people get to know you and hopefully (and in the process, if permissible, with all conditions applying, you'll probably end up knowing them better too) with all the help you can give each other, everybody grows. Everybody's happy.

But this takes time, and effort, both of which are becoming increasingly scarce resources. Resources that we can't recover no matter what. (Unless you're talking time travel here. And oh, if you do have something that can help, you know where to reach us.)

Make an attempt. Who knows, it could be the best thing you ever did; both for yourself, and the group.
